PERSONAL PROJECTS

Untitled

In February of 2020 my parents left to visit India with the intent to return in March. I was away at a photography workshop and returned during the second week of March. My return was the same weekend the Bay Area went into shelter-in-place. My parents were only able to return at the end of July. During that time of shelter-in-place and isolation, I noticed changes in my health and also felt a deep longing for family connection.

30 days of pd - A Parkinson’s disease journal

In April of 2022 I started a daily portraiture and writing project for Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Every day I took a self-portrait using my iPhone, and wrote down what I was feeling immediately after and posted it on Instagram as a way to raise awareness with people who did not have this disease.. Having avoided photos of myself in many shapes and forms for years, this was bold for me. Essential to this project was the lack of editing or self-critique. I did make a few images on some days that didn’t resonate but for the most part everything was in the moment. You may find some spelling and grammar errors. I’ve left those in there to reflect the immediacy of the words, knowing that if I reviewed it too much I would not share anything.

AmmA

In March of 2017 my Amma’s mother’s health started to decline rapidly. The week after her death, her younger brother, Cheena, was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. Within six months they were both gone and a house once filled with the noise of three television sets and many international phone calls was suddenly quiet with only the ticking second hand of the various wall clocks to fill the void. My Amma bore the brunt of taking care of both of them during this time, dealing with the after effects of both their deaths and six other family deaths, all within a thirteen month period.

This project began in a documentary photography class at SFAI with Prof. Judy Walgren in March of 2017.
